A signed and numbered handmade 120pp limited edition of 50 copies set in Garamond type on A5 90gsm St Cuthbert's Mill watercolour inkjet paper, quarter bound in faux suede.
The portrait painter William Orpen was born in Dublin in 1878. In 1917 he was sent to France as an official war artist. After the war, he wrote these recollections, modestly titled An Onlooker. They amusingly, and movingly, recount his experiences painting, and meeting the enlisted men in the trenches and in their off-duty moments, as well as senior army officers in their official and unofficial capacities. This is a fully illustrated edition with all the paintings and photographs from the original edition.
